Intimacy and Solitude
Wendy Sharpe is one of Australia’s most significant and awarded artists.
She is known for her strong figurative paintings, her use of narrative,
and for her sensuous use of paint.
Wendy has been a finalist in the Sulman prize 9 times, The Archibald Prize,
3 times (all for self portraits) and the Dobell drawing prize 10 times.
She has held 28 solo exhibitions through out Australia. This is her first solo
exhibition in Adelaide.
Her work has been written about widely in newspapers, magazines,
periodicals and books. It appears in major collections public and private,
throughout Australia.
This exhibition emphasizes a recurring theme in Wendy’s work, that of a
domestic interior. We are given a glimpse of a private world. The
paintings are like vignettes, evocative rather than prescriptive. There is a
sense of the mysterious and the unsaid. We are invited to enter this world
and create our own scenarios in this open ended drama. The female
character in each painting is depicted interacting with others or alone with
her thoughts.
“Sharpe has been drawing and painting obsessively all her life .Her
constant subject has been people, and the relationships between
people. Sharpe is a prolific artist with a passion for what she does.”
